Lake Placid... Real Town, Real Mountain

Lake Placid was named number one in North America for off-hill activities by Ski Magazine, which also happened last year, and the year before, and the year before that.

In fact Lake Placid has been sited as the model ski resort of the future. "Experts foresee the end of purely ski resorts and the rise of the total mountain resort. Lake Placid is already there." (Ski Magazine)

Lake Placid isn't just an outdoor mall like some resorts. There are no sprawling developments, no strip malls, no endless lines of traffic. Lake Placid isn't a corporate notion of what a ski resort should be. Lake Placid is a real mountain resort -- with a real mountain.

High Speed Quad ...gets you on easy and gets you up fast!

Whiteface has made many notable improvements in recent years. A brand spanking new high speed detachable quad chairlift was the most recent. This just a couple years after installing the new Cloudsplitter Gondola gives Whiteface-- a mountain with a big edge in terrain--an edge in lifts, too. Although new technology detachable lifts travel at high speeds, they move very slowly at the loading and unloading spots, making them much more user friendly. Not intimidating for beginners and kids. If you can stand up and sit down, you can ride this lift. And, now, in a six minute ride, it will wisk skiers and snowboarders from the base lodge up 1,315 feet to the bottom of the summit chair. Great mountain with fast and easy lifts!

Experts Only Runs

The Slides -- hundreds of feet of treeless sheer rock face atop the East's greatest vertical drop -- will be open this winter (conditions permitting) offering access to the greatest lift-accessed backcountry skiing around.

The Slides opened for the first time last winter and skiers enjoyed massive amounts of powder. After skiing the ungroomed backcountry skiers were saying "It's like nothing I've ever skied in the East," and "I've rarely skied this sustained steepness out West."

Intermediates -- Three Mile Run From The Top

While you were out enjoying the summer sun, the Whiteface staff was out on the slopes. Major work was done on most of the intermediate terrain. Some of the most dramatic changes can be seen on Paron's Run and Excelsior.

The trails were widened where Paron's drops into Excelsior making for easier transitions. The corners on Excelsior have been broadened, and a new connector was cut to improve the transition to Lower Cloudspin.

All these changes translate to better visibility, more room to maneuver and more fun for you. You'll have more than three miles of intermediate trail from the top of the mountain.

Snowboarders -- Super Half-pipe

Whiteface Mountain has long been home to some of the best alpine boarding in the East. And freestylers have been catching major air in our terrain park for years.

The Mountain is also home base for Will Garrow, the guy laying tracks in Warren Miller flicks.

Now Whiteface has a Super Pipe, and it's lift serviced. That means you can pull as many 540's as you want and then ride back up in comfort to do it again.

Whiteface offers a great ride for any boarder willing to try, and it just keeps getting better.

Just for Kids

For youngsters new to the sport of skiing, Whiteface Mountain is the perfect place to learn. One-third of the mountain's terrain is beginner trails.

There is even an area created just for beginners, Kids Kampus. Here kids can learn to love the sport under the guidance of some of the best children's instructors around.

New for this year in Kids Kampus: A more convenient connector from the Bunny Hutch Triple Chair to the Kids Kampus Bronze Trail -- and more snowmaking for more fun.

The Bunny Hutch Nursery, for kids ages 1 to 6, offers individual and group activities and indoor and outdoor play time. Play & Ski, for ages 4 to 6, allows children to enjoy a combination of indoor and outdoor activities. And, the Junior Development Program, for ages 7 to 12, includes a lift ticket, instruction and at day's end, each child receives a personal skills assessment report.

Whiteface 3-peat: #1 again in SKI Mag survey

WILMINGTON, N.Y. - For the third straight year, Whiteface Mountain, the site of the 1980 Winter Olympic alpine skiing events as well as the 2000 Winter Goodwill Games ski and ride competitions, has been voted best in the eastern United States and second behind Mont Tremblant, Quebec in eastern North America. The honor became official this week when the October issue of SKI Magazine arrived in subscriber’s mailboxes.

The news brought reactions of shock, flattery and pride.

“We are very appreciative of the public’s reaction to what has been taking place at Whiteface Mountain since 1999,” said Charles A. Gargano, chairman of the Empire State Development Corporation and the Olympic Regional Development Authority, which operates Whiteface Mountain. “Prior to Governor (George E.) Pataki’s re-investment in the resort, we could see that Whiteface had lost ground. But we felt that, with upgrades, there was a chance to re-gain the confidence of skiers and snowboarders. Starting with the eight-passenger Cloudsplitter gondola in 1999, to the installation of the Face Lift high-speed quad chair one year ago and many other improvements in between, given the upturn in Whiteface ski and ride visits, $20 million has been well-spent.”

“I think it’s quite remarkable to get this type of ranking three straight years,” said ORDA President and CEO Ted Blazer. “Personally, I feel that we are most worthy of the accolades bestowed upon us by our guests. But three years in a row is quite humbling. We couldn’t be happier.”

Four thousand SKI subscribers participated in the independently conducted poll that turned up 33 destinations. A multitude of categories ranged from après ski to value.

“The improvements and upgrades over the last four to five years are making an impact with Whiteface Mountain guests,” said Blazer. “In that span of time, the Governor, Chairman Gargano and I have worked together to outline a plan allowing Whiteface to become a bonafide player in ski and snowboard tourism. The end result has seen the venue develop into an economic leader in the Adirondack region.

“Together with the Governor and the ORDA board, we created a mission, and it has become a reality,” concluded Blazer. “Now we are on equal footing with the top New England destinations.”

With its array of venues that were used in the 1932 and 1980 Winter Games, the Whiteface / Lake Placid region was voted the top resort for off-hill activities. The Lake Placid sports menu allows visitors to experience bobsled, luge, skating, hockey and more in addition to their ski and ride experiences.
